New Reading

For the new nonfiction reading, I chose 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher.  Although the Netflix series did just come out I am talking about the book which, yes I actually read. Below is a pdf to the book.

Hi Class! Post your OLD readings as a comment below

Hi everyone,

Per the syllabus, this week is about Old and New writing. I’m going to include an example of my own. It’s from Henry David Thoreau called “Civil Disobedience,” and its relevance hasn’t diminished with time, even if the specific instances he references are somewhat different than what we’re talking about today.

Please post your own “old” writing and be prepared to explain its significance!

Thanks

Blog post for week of Apr. 6 postponed (my fault)

Hi class,

The blog post for this week says to comment on the presentations and they haven’t happened yet. This is my oversight, so no makeup blog post this week. I should’ve double checked that (and a few other things!) before sending the syllabus to the printers.

have a nice break! Looking forward to everyone’s presentations!

Multiple Interpretations

The work that I chose that could be subjected to multiple interpretations is a song called Airplanes by B.O.B. featuring Hayley Williams.  This is my favorite song.  B.O.B. wrote a sequel to this song, which features Eminem. Part I talks about how he was going through easier times in his life. Many people take this as being ungrateful for his fame, but I do not think that is the case because Part II talks about his success. However, it seems like it is from the perspective of someone who was already famous. It talks about what his life would be like if he did not make the choices that made him famous.

It is noticeable to me that there is a difference in the way the video supports the song and the way I hear the song without seeing the video because B.O.B. is shown on stage with a lot of lights. Hayley Williams is shown singing while in a room with lights, as well. However, she is also shown singing in photographs that were taken. This indicates to me that B.O.B. is famous and restrained while Hayley is carefree and having a good time with her friends.

People may think that this song is just about airplanes because of the name; however, this song is all about dreams. It is also about what B.O.B.’s goals are and what his failures were.

Does he wish he wasn’t as famous or does he wish he was more successful?

Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin’ stars I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin’ stars I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now

Yeah, yeah I could use a dream or a genie or a wish To go back to a place much simpler than this Cause after all the partying and smashing and crashing And all the glitz and glam and the fashion And all the pandemonium and all the madness There comes a time when you fade to the blackness And when you’re staring at the phone in your lap And you hoping but them people never call you back But that’s just how the story unfolds You get another hand soon after you fold And when your plans unravel in the sand What would you wish for, if you had one chance? So airplane airplane sorry I’m late I’m on my way so don’t close that gate If I don’t make that then I’ll switch my flight and I’ll be right back at it by the end of the night

Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin’ stars I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin’ stars I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now

Yeah yeah somebody take me back to the days Before this was a job before I got paid Before it ever mattered what I had in my bank Yeah back when I was trying to get a tip at subway And back then I was rapping for the hell of it But nowadays we rapping to stay relevant I’m guessing if can make some wishes out of airplanes Then maybe oh maybe I’ll go back to the days Before the politics that we call the rap game And back when ain’t nobody listened to my mix tape And back before when I tried to cover up my slang But this is for the Decatur what’s up Bobby Ray So can I get a wish to end the politics And get back to the music that started this shit So here I stand and then again I say I’m hoping we can make some wishes outta airplanes

Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin’ stars I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin’ stars I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now

I could really use a wish right now I, I, I could really use a wish right now Like, like, like shootin’ stars I, I, I could really use a wish right now A wish a wish right now

My Interpretation of Matthew 6 (KJV Bible) (Blog Post #5)

For my translation I have decided to post my interpretation of Matthew 6 from the KJV bible. I chose verses 1-6 and 16-21 to interpret. Below is the original source followed by my own interpretation.

Matthew 6 King James Version (KJV)

6 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

My Interpretation:

Be sure that you do your good deeds in private for if they are witnessed God will not reward you for them.

So when you do good deeds do not announce them for all the world to know as only hypocrites do that. The people who do good deeds only for recognition from others will not benefit from them.

When you do a good deed just do it, don’t dwell on it. Think of it as no more than a mundane event such as opening a door or getting off a chair.

Even though your good deeds are done in private God will reward you publicly.

When you pray, do not pray like a hypocrite does, only in the company of others, it will not help them or you.

Instead pray in private, even though nobody else will notice God will and will reward you publicly.

When you fast do not appear as if you are hungry so other people will know you are fasting as that is what hypocrites do.

When you fast do not act famished and look disheveled.

Even though other people won’t know you’re fasting, God will know and will reward you publicly.

Do not endeavor to acquire worldly possessions, for they do not last. They will either break, become old and outdated, or stolen.

Instead endeavor to heaven because what’s there is eternal not transient like the possessions we have here.

Because what you treasure is where your heart is.
